Come visit the New England Shire Centre, one of the largest English Shire farms in the world. Although the Shire is the most popular heavy horse in England there are still less than 4,000 Shires in the world. They are becoming a near extinct breed of horse. A visit will consist of viewing and interacting with approximately 45 English Shire stallions, geldings, mares and foals. The tours are available to groups and reservations are required. |

The current Guinness Book of World Records lists an English Shire gelding as the worlds largest horse, standing 21 hands high and weighing 3,000 pounds. This was Samson, who was featured on Animal Planet. Although Samson: has passed on, you may visit Hercules, his full brother, who is only 7 years old and may be the next World Record holder! The Shire s average over 17 hands tall and sometimes reach over 19 hands. It is the Largest breed of horse in the world, generally weighing 2,000 to 2,500 pounds and is the heaviest of the heavy horses. Black with white stockings and a blaze on the face is the classic image but, nowadays Shires also come in bays & browns with the white markings and less commonly, grey. The Shire is a good and faithful worker in agriculture and commerce and has been said to be a synonym for strength, constitution, energy & endurance. They are docile and kind, but have personality to spare and a strong desire to form a genuine partnership with the people who handle them. They are used for every discipline a horse can be used for, from logging, commercial carriage driving, dressage to trail riding. Living up to his calm and accepting nature, the Shire has shown himself to be a champion in all of these areas. From the show ring to the furrow Shires are known for their strength, athletic ability and docile disposition. And, so it was with this breed of horse, the needs of the Medieval Knights and the temper of the times called for a horse of enormous bulk, prodigious muscular strength, and docility and the stockmen and farmers of England responded with one of their finest living creatures, The Shire Horse!
